Bailey was a Social Media Intern for the Boys & Girls Club of Westminster, Maryland during the Spring 2018 semester. The internship was part of a class at McDaniel College and consisted of a variety of writing and content creation assignments for the Boys and Girls Club. After transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Bailey declared a major in Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies to take other courses in content creation, digital strategy, media theory, and persuasive writing.

Writing Projects

As part of McDaniel College’s ENG 3312 (Writing for Nonprofits) course, there were a variety of writing projects to be completed on behalf of the Boys & Girls Club, including a survey of grants that the Club could apply for, a proposed social media plan with a schedule and suggested improvements, and a fundraising proposal. Bailey even started to post on the Club’s behalf and self-taught new skills along the way, including the creation of an original Snapchat filter for an event. The course was completed with a B overall.

Comcast Cares Day: Westminster Clean Up

The biggest project of this internship was marketing for the Comcast Cares Day volunteer effort to clean out the old building, as the Boys and Girls Club had successfully opened their new space. One of the assignments for the McDaniel class, Writing for Nonprofits, was to create a campaign to promote the project, Bailey wrote a parody of the viral Drake hit “God’s Plan”, and group members from the class recorded a music video to promote the clean-up. The video spread quickly throughout the campus and surrounding area, maxing out Comcast’s volunteer sign-ups for the clean-up within a matter of days. Bailey also took over the Facebook account for a live stream on site during the clean-up to engage followers of the Club’s Facebook page and highlight the many community members and organizations supporting the effort.
